Design of switching sequences for sine parameters estimation on switched antenna arrays

Résumé

Most research on source localization using arrays of antennas relies on the assumption that the array’s antennas are all sampled at the same times. However, for RF signals, and especially in embedded systems, this is a very costly assumption to uphold. In this paper, we consider the case where the antennas of the array are sampled by a single receiver channel, through the use of a switch. The main advantage of such a system is to reduce costs, but on the other hand, the samples are not measured at the same time on each antenna. This paper deals with the design of the switching sequence that can dramatically impact the performance of sine parameters estimation in applications such as source localization. Cramér–Rao Bounds (CRB) are computed in order to derive design criteria. From their analytic expression, guidelines are proposed in order to define switching sequences that provide good performances. In addition, numerical results allow to compare the performance of the proposed sequences to relevant lower bounds and to the performance of sequences obtained by an exhaustive search.
