Ahmad Wahdan. Maestro among the Frenzied streets of Cairo
Résumé
Heir of a family of craftsmen, Ahmad Wahdan became a musician when he was accepted among the professionals of Mohamed-Ali Avenue. He became the "owner of a chair" in one of the cafes of this emblematic music venue in Egypt and began to expand his activities throughout the city. Professional practice is, in fact, tightly embedded in the city: for nearly forty years, Ahmad has been walking the urban scenes, both musical and sociable. In the articulation between places and displacements, the stakes of recognition, the processes of hierarchy and the patient elaboration of statutes are at stake. For, in addition to musical skills, the job involves multiplying encounters, it requires an ability to travel in diverse urban and social worlds. The tension between social and artistic skills is compounded by the tension inherent in the collective arbitration of positions, deliberations on music and the logic of categorization. Ahmad's journey also sheds light on the mechanisms of capturing elements from disjointed cultural worlds. In the end, it constitutes a sensitive prism through which to grasp the contours of singular artistic dynamics on the temporality of a life; an artist's life.
