Mechanical role of pleura on lung motion during breathing

Résumé

Organ motions, in particular due to patient’s breathing, are crucial for the accuracy of radiotherapy and hadrontherapy treatments. We developed a pulmonary motion simulation [Vil06] based on the continuous mechanics framework. A key point of our model is the inclusion of the pleura action, letting the lungs to slide against the chest wall during the simulation of the respiration. To quantify the actual role of the pleura on lung motion, we compared simulations of lung displacements obtained by allowing or blocking these slidings.
