A Reflexive Approach in Learning Through Uchronia

Résumé

This work in progress paper presents a story-based approach in a simulation-based learning environment in the context of crisis management. We offer a reflexive approach to learning for adults based on the uchronia. Our game design UCHRONIE offers two phases of simulation. During the scenario, the learner will explore several possible worlds. During the debriefing, he may view several possible alternatives to the scenario as a timeline. 1 Narrative as a Maze In narrative-based Virtual Environments for training, such as FearNot! [1], Nothing For Dinner [2], IN-TALE [3] and Crystal Island [4], it remains difficult for computer systems to combine objectives like maintaining control over the story and user agency without inconsistency. In order to leave a degree of freedom to the user, and allow the author to retain control on the artwork, Umberto Eco's works [5,6] are especially interesting on the relation between reader and work. Deleuze and Guattari in their pluralistic book [7] offer with their definition of rhizome in terms of maze the possibilities of infinite paths, which leads us to propose to make this maze/network an explicit part of the story and a kind of fiction that combines back in time travel and alternatives, as in uchronia. Learning through a story has many advantages in terms of contextualiza-tion, memorization and facilitation of emotional engagement in learning. In fact, according to Bruner [8] our memory is narrative. A narrative has the ability to isolate and highlight strong points of story, key moments. As part of an apprenticeship , these key moments allow the learner to consider possible alternatives and naturally bring reflexivity. As for the system, those key points are what it needs to achieve the objectives cited above.
