Open-Endedness: Definitions and Shortcuts

Abstract

The open-endedness of a system is often de ned as the continual production of novelty. Here we report on recent work by Banzhaf et al. that pins down this concept more rigorously. We de ne several types of novelty that a system may exhibit, and classify these as variation, innovation, and emergence. We also de ne an architecture suitable for building simulations of open-ended novelty- generating systems.
