Open-Endedness: Definitions and Shortcuts
Résumé
The open-endedness of a system is often dened as the continual production of novelty. Here we report on recent work by Banzhaf et al. that pins down this concept more rigorously. We dene several types of novelty that a system may exhibit, and classify these as variation, innovation, and emergence. We also dene an architecture suitable for building simulations of open-ended novelty- generating systems.
