Developing employees' sustainable commitment in SMEs: an organizational context
Résumé
Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) play a pivotal role in driving economic growth, innovation, and employment worldwide. We are witnessing an acceleration in the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises, boosted by advances in artificial intelligence to remain competitive. In this context, the European commission supports this SMEs sustainable transformation (European Commission, 2017 1 ) with the aim to achieve a climate-neutral, resource-efficient, and agile digital economy. Indeed, as they have a snowballing contribution to economic growth, SMEs are widely recognized as significant catalysts for economic development (Raihan et al., 2023) and transitions. However, sustainable development in their activity is a real challenge for SMEs, especially considering that SMEs often face unique challenges, such as lack of awareness and commitment and appropriate skills. In this context, this paper explores how organizational context encourages employees to make sustainable development commitment, to promote SMEs sustainable transformation. This research fills a gap in literature by integrating the roles of digitalization and sustainability in the specific context of SMEs, offering valuable insights for both academic and practical application in management. The study aims to understand what influence employee sustainable commitment in the organizational context, identify potential barriers and facilitators to help SME managers to create a more sustainable working environment.
