The poster discusses the potential of using commercial auto-steering (AS) in viticulture to reduce the environmental impact of chemical weeding and to relieve drivers of tedious tasks. The study evaluates the observed spatial accuracy of AS in different mechanised vineyard operations and assesses its relevance to the viticulture context. Two precise (RTK) AS from Topcon and Trimble were installed in two tractors used in different vineyards. Tests were carried out to assess the accuracy of each AS on reference routes with different working conditions. Physical markers were used to manually measure the difference between the real position of the tractor and the reference position. The study showed that the observed accuracy from 3 to 6 cm makes it possible to consider many common operations in viticulture. However, the results show a significant variability which is limiting for operations that require precision, for example, mechanical weeding on the row, thinning, leaf removal, etc. The interviews performed with the drivers show that they were in agreement about the potential of AS in viticulture. Drivers' evaluation and expectations vary with the considered operations. The study concludes that retro-fitting precise (RTK-GNSS) AS to tractors in viticulture has great potential to improve the quality of weeding, reduce environmental impact, and relieve the driver of tedious tasks, but the observed spatial accuracy may not be sufficient for some operations that require a lot of precision.
