Ancient maps, geotechnical and (geo)archaeological data: GIS integration for the understanding of archaeological sites and for decision making in rescue archaeology

The city of Lyon (France) is located in a complex geomorphological site, combined with a rich urban archaeological record.
Therefore, the numerous rescue archaeology operations which take place in Lyon need prior knowledge of the expected ancient
landscape configuration to optimise their planning. Furthermore, placing the excavated sites within their geographical context
at a smaller scale (district or even city wide) is helpful for their understanding. Varied sources of data can provide insights in the
topographical evolution of the city, from the Iron Age to the contemporary period, but have been until today considered sepa-
rately. Geoarchaeological observations, geological and geotechnical boreholes, as well as XIXth century maps could be combined
in a GIS. Each kind of data necessitated specific processes and critical thinking to be used. Borehole data had to be recorded in
a dedicated relational database and underwent geostatistical analysis before being usable to create digital elevation models. An
extensive archive research was made in order to convert ancient maps specific levelling system to a modern one before any digit-
ising and interpolation work could be undertaken. Although susceptible to various biases, these methods and tools allowed us to
start reconstructing the topographical evolution of key areas of Lyon at different periods.
