Maritime Traffic Behaviour and Network Analysis in the Caribbean Using Geovisualisation Techniques

This proposal aims to present a geovisualisation dashboard for maritime traffic at the scale of the Caribbean. It compiles several indicators, computed from raw AIS data and vessel registration data, and confronts them against data from a variety of sources, in order to facilitate exploration by different types of users across various spatial and temporal scales, while distinguishing between vessel types. The goal is to provide assistance in identifying maritime traffic hotspots in light of various issues such as maritime risk, environmental protection, and maritime space planning.
As we focus on the understanding of maritime traffic behaviour in general, the inclusion of some features is necessary, including the number of port calls by port, the number of travels between ports as well as regulated areas and socio-economic indicators such as the Human Development Index. The necessity to bring greater complexity by distinguishing between various vessel types is taken into consideration, underscoring the diversity of operations taking place within the maritime ecosystem of the Caribbean, ranging from cargo shipping to cruise tourism to inter-island ferries.
The ambition of this work is to provide valuable information and a framework for joint reflection between policymakers, environmental agencies, and maritime industries stakeholders to establish specific policies for maritime safety, environmental protection, and sharing maritime space in the Caribbean. Beyond the Caribbean example, the AIS data analysis method developed provides a relevant basis for future research into the analysis of port calls, port activity and maritime networks.
