Flour of corn for dye removal from pulp and paper effluents

Numerous wastewater treatment methods including physical (membranes, adsorption on carbons), physicochemical (coagulation/flocculation), chemical (oxidation) and biological (biodegradation) have been reported in the literature for the removal of pollutants (in particular dyes) from the pulp and paper mill effluents. However, because of the high costs, many of these methods for treating dyes in wastewater have not been widely applied on a large scale in the paper industry. Thus, there is a need to develop new decontamination methods that are effective and acceptable in industrial use. A series of experiments is being conducted to evaluate the possibility of the use of chemically modified starch-enriched flour as adsorbents in wastewater treatment. These low-cost materials are effective and exhibit high adsorption capacities toward dye molecules. This article presents the industrial problematic and describes the new process used.
