Pragmatics of digital identity: ethnographic exploration among the ranks of young "in-trained" users

Résumé

There is a vast literature on digital uses covering a variety of objects, research questions and scales of observation. While the various annual barometers on the subject make it possible to identify major statistical trends within the general population, more targeted qualitative studies are interested in emerging uses within circumscribed communities of users and make it possible to understand the modes of appropriation, adaptation, or resistance that accompany the "socialization of goods" (Callon 2007). Our contribution proposes to adopt an intermediary position between a macro analysis of statistical trends and a micro analysis of emerging uses, in order to approach from the inside, with an approach that is both participatory/ethnographic and comparative, the digital identification practices of informed and trained (in-trained) digital native young adults. To this end, we will present the first results of a study conducted in France, which questions the digital confidence of young "advanced and informed" users through the exploration of their digital identification practices. The study, based on a sample of 132 students and young graduates in the digital sector, highlights two major results: (a) the absence of a causal link between technical competence and acculturation to risks, on the one hand, and ordinary practices, on the other hand; (b) very heterogeneous practices and uses within an apparently homogeneous population that should be segmented. In order to validate these first results, we will discuss the interest of a comparative approach based on an extension of the survey to other countries and to other educational fields.
