Chapter 8: Integration of sociological approaches in rodent management: historical perspectives
Résumé
Historically humans and rodents compete for food and interact in diverse spaces, the rural, urban, and elsewhere in-between. There is an inevitable demand for rodent management. This is not only for crop protection but more prominently in recent years, for the diseases that can be transmitted to people. The chapter focuses on approaches that have been applied to tackling the management of rodent pests in varied geographies. Intersections with recent narratives for one health, climate change, and trends affecting rodent management will also be discussed. Sociological approaches used in surveillance, community-informed assessments, planning and generating institutional change for rodent management comprise the bulk of the chapter. Related to this, insights on the communication strategies, tools and evaluation of interventions are discussed. Two case studies exemplifying these approaches are presented.
