A Comparative Analysis of Approaches to Design and Capitalize Data Indicators

Résumé

In Technology Enhanced Learning field, learning analytics cover multiple research challenges, among which tracking data analysis, data indicators design and visualization and their adoption by end-users. Part of our research effort is dedicated to changing their design and use process, in order to capitalize them. This would allow cost saving on design workflow and encourage the adoption by teachers and students throughout their implications with a better understanding of the capitalization mechanism. A study of the state of the art has been made to explore various solutions which could be exploited in the capitalization of indicators on both levels, design and use. In this paper, a proposition of capitalization is detailed through measurable and accessible functionalities. The list of those functionalities is being used as criteria in a comparative grid to analyze how existing design approaches enable data indicators capitalization process. This analysis points out the purpose of our work to reach a larger scope of users, thus helping them understand and work on data indicators capitalization. It sets a direction toward a user-centered approach, aiming at a better control of users over their own observation needs and the use of their data.
