Explorative study on language means used to explain the meaning of multiplying fractions

Résumé

In this paper, we give attention to how students engage in the exploration of mathematical concepts and in particular which language means students use during this exploration. The presented study is situated in the context of fraction operation, specifically focusing on fraction multiplication. Multiplying fractions is much more than learning and teaching the mathematical algorithm. It is about links and relationships and knowing why multiplying two fractions works as part of a part relationship. This qualitative study identifies (topic-specific) language means that students use to talk about their ideas of multiplying two fractions. The analyses show how important meaning-related language means are for building a conceptual understanding of multiplying two fractions.
