Evolution of mathematics courses in engineering: new syllabus, same activity?

Résumé

The Bologna Process and in particular the establishment of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in 2008 represented a turning point in the design of the syllabus in engineering programs. One of the major changes was the incorporation of the official conception of "knowledge to be taught" in terms of competences. However, these changes in the way how engineering programs are conceived clash with the results of several analyses which seem to indicate that the existing mathematical activity in engineering mathematics education has changed very little in recent decades. We present a study of mathematical activity in the evaluation exams in four different engineering syllabi from 1994 to 2020 in a Spanish engineering school. The results indicate that even if the way knowledge to be taught is presented evolves significantly, the actual mathematical activity remains very stable.
