Studying Small Medieval Communities in the Light of the Historiographical Revival of the Commons

Résumé

During the late Middle Ages, communal Italy and, to a lesser extent, the lower Rhône Valley began to develop forms of urban autonomy linked to public participation. Although larger towns have been extensively studied, smaller communities at the intersection of urban and rural history are not well-known. My dissertation takes a comparative approach to the political life of medium-sized communities from the late twelfth to the early fifteenth centuries when political organization gradually took shape. Regarding Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, I discovered that the commons played a fundamental role in the life of these communities. The term "commons" refers to a complex and evolving reality that has been subject to various interpretations in historiography. Commons should be understood here as rival assets used by communities, individually or collectively, managed jointly or with delegated management. They can be grazing land or collective facilities such as irrigation canals. In the case of St Rémy, the fundamental questions concern not only the economic organisation of the community but also its political definition. For a long time, the dominant historiography regarded the commons as a form of archaism. In recent decades, however, they have been reinterpreted and re-evaluated. In medieval history, Italian historiography has entered into a fruitful dialogue with the modernists in order to place commons in a long-term perspective, to study how they were created, managed and evolved, and to show their fundamental role in the history and functioning of communities, taking into account the contributions of other social sciences under the influence of Anglo-Saxon research. In this paper, my aim is to place the study of the Saint Rémy commons within the historiography, by highlighting the specificities of Provence and developing the issues raised by the community's appropriation of these commons, the underlying logic of the actors and what these commons allow us to understand about the socio-political dynamics of this community.
