The Geometry of Tracing, a Possible Link Between Geometric Drawing and Euclid’s Geometry?

Résumé

The reproduction of figures is a common task in elementary school, very present in the curricula and in many textbooks. Under what conditions, especially regarding the use of instruments, does this task allow the conceptualization of geometric objects, in what we call the geometry of tracing? What role can situations of action, formulation and validation play in this conceptualization? We explore the potentials of these situations to help students enter into a definitional approach and a proof approach in the geometry of tracing. The whole reflection questions the possible continuities between material geometry and theoretical geometry.
