The obstacles encountered by salaried and volunteer coaches within the French Boxing Federation
Les freins rencontrés par les entraineur•es salarié•es et bénévoles au sein de la Fédération Française de Boxe
Résumé
Introduction. In Tokyo in 2021, the representation of women in coaching positions was only 13%. In France, women are under-represented in the training professions (11%).
The objective of this study is to report on the conditions of exercise of coaches within the French Boxing Federation.
Method. A survey was conducted by online questionnaire accessible from April 1 to December 31, 2022, assessing their socio-demographic profile, their status, the training, their training path, their reasons for engagement, and the obstacles encountered by coaches.
Results. A total of 163 participants: 17 women including 1 employee; 146 men including 16 employees.
Regarding the profile of the participants, 41% of women live alone against 15% of men; 79% of men have one or more children against 47% of women. They and they have the same diplomas to train, so the audience is different in level.
The barriers faced by women are low wages/bonuses, lack of solidarity with women, and gender stereotypes. Those of men concern: unsuitable working hours, little possibility of advancement in the mission.
With this new knowledge, we can identify the differences in conditions of practice in coaching between men and women.
Discussion. The results of this exploratory study conducted in a single sports federation testify to the relationships of domination at work that probably contribute to the distancing of women from these leadership positions.
