Dieu et mon Droit: The Context of Henry V's Self-Representation
Résumé
There are few images of Henry that date from his lifetime. all of which are set in specfic contexts. Henry can be seen being knighted in prayer or receiving a book, but he never presents himself out of context.
It is even difficult to know what he may have commissioned directly, as he preferred to be perceived as receiving praise than soliciting self advancement. Henry who was always sensitive to the political climate knew that he lived at a time of intense unease with imagery, which was seen to lead to idolatry.
This make the famed profile problematic: if it stems from an original in Henry's day, what was the context of his representation?
