Le Domaine de Thot de Pa-Oudjy: Réalité d'un toponyme de la province de l'Oryx

Résumé

The Domain of Thoth of Pa-Udjy, Pr Ḏḥwty n(y) Pȝ-Wḏy, is a small place of the Sixteenth Province of Upper Egypt, also known as Oryx Province. The province is well known among Egyptologists for its great monuments, which mostly date from Old and Middle Kingdoms, and from studies of religious geography texts from Ptolemaic and Roman periods. However, monuments and texts from other periods provide us many toponyms for this province, more or less known in studies and which remain names most of the time, with no archaeological traces in the landscape. These documents are nonetheless full of precious clues for the setting of Egyptian geography. The Domain is a discreet place in the text sphere and even more in the archaeological sphere. It appears to exist only during New Kingdom and Third Intermediate Period, thus far from the monuments and texts of religious geography mentioned above. With the help of these few documents mentioning the Domain, we will manage to determine the etymology of the Domain, a question more complicated than it seems. This information will have its importance in the main question of this study, the status of the place and the setting of where it should situate in the Oryx Province, defining so an area where we might be able to find archaeological remains.
