Tombes des élites steppiques de l’époque post-hunnique dans la région pontique

Résumé

This article is devoted to the “princely” tombs of the Pontic steppes of the post-Hunnic period. The sites of the Hunno-Bulgarian steppe people are very few in the Pontic region for the second half of the fifth and the first half of the sixth century. Some of the tombs of military leaders can often be distinguished by the presence of a ceremonial sword. The funerary practices attested in these tombs belong to the warlike tradition of the earlier Hunnic period. A clear Mediterranean / Protobyzantine influence is manifested in the equipment of these chiefs. The furniture of the “princely” female tombs also testifies to the Byzantine influence on the aristocratic culture of the barbarians of the steppes. The presence of luxury objects of Byzantine origin can be explained by the political and military alliances that the post-Hunnic Steppe chieftains maintained with the Empire.
