The morphology of relationship in Andi

Résumé

This paper provides a synchronic description and, when required, a historical account, of the morphological expression of different types of relationship in Andi (Nakh-Daghestanian), viz. possession, kinship, geographical origin, filialilty (i.e. relationship to a son or daughter), and marriage (i.e. relationship to a spouse). Then, it argues that the derivator used for the production of names of peoples and kins and that used to produce nouns meaning ‘spouse of X’ contain a morpheme which can be analysed as an associative suffix. This enables a reanalysis of the nominal inflection paradigm as based on thematic stem formants which feature a strong connection with two derivational suffixes used for the expression of relationship.
