Work and the future as represented by French adolescents: the role of secondary school type and anticipated duration of post-secondary education
Résumé
Abstract
This study, conducted in France, sought to describe the organization of the content of social representations that secondary-school students undergoing transitions constructed of work and their own future, taking two variables into account: their type of secondary school and the anticipated duration of their post-secondary education. 669 adolescents enrolled at three types of secondary schools were recruited. They were given two free-association tasks (with the inductors “work” and “your future”). Our results highlight the place occupied by money and post-secondary education in all of the representations, which seem to constitute new social norms for them. Revealing specific organizations of social representations according to secondary school type and to the anticipated duration of post-secondary education, they underscore the advantage of taking this subjective variable into account to better understand the place occupied by contemporary uncertainties and to more successfully integrate the variable into support aimed at helping students plan their transitions.
