Coherent structures in fully-developed pipe turbulence
Résumé
A mean flow is first chosen to closely match experimental observations. The nature of perturbations superimposed upon this turbulence is discussed. Optimal growth calculations predict two distinct classes of structures, clearly associated with near-wall and large-scale structures. Quantitative correspondence of these structures with experimental observations is exceptional. Further, self-sustenance and interrelationships between the classes of structures are considered.
