The Artist As Primary Spectator
L'artiste comme spectateur princeps
Résumé
Starting Tony Smith’s famous story about his experience of the end of art during a car drive, this article develops the hypothesis according to which some artists consider themselves as spectators rather than creators of their own work. They are in a way primary spectators of a work of art they are the first and the only ones to recognize as such. This article seeks to understand the forms which this paradoxical experience of art nurture.
