How the scientific collaboration of engineers and architects on local building cultures can make a vital breakthrough: 10 years of works in Grenoble to support people affected by disasters and make communities resilient

Résumé

In the majority of universities around the world, architectural and civil engineering disciplines are often siloed. This division is detrimental to the relationship between the construction industry and the design industry but also to the research field. To address this issue, two institutions in Grenoble (ENSAG/CRAterre and UJF/3SR) started to offer multidisciplinary initiative courses in 2007 ("Conception collaborative" course and "Projet multidisciplinaire" involving master students). Thanks to this first innovative pedagogic collaboration the gap between researchers has been bridged and followed by research projects in order to enhance the seismic resistant knowledge of traditional construction with earth.
