Les espaces publics en Europe à travers les guides de voyage. 1950-1970
Résumé
Studying some of the French language guides concerning Europe, published between 1950 and 1970, we can examine what is their approach of the
urban public spaces.
To what extent do the guides give, on an European scale, an account of the shapes and uses of those urban spatial devices, considering usages, local or touristic practices, atmospheres but also the town morphology and its historic evolution?
It is particularly interesting to observe how travel guides describe the new urban development, especially in the context of the rebuilding after the Second World War. This enlightens us about the way one perceives and appropriates the public spaces depending on the manner of conceiving the urban landscape at a given moment.
