Rapid determination of the limit of fatigue for woven carbon-fiber epoxy matrix composite materials initially submitted to a low energy impact
Nowadays, carbon-fiber epoxy-matrix woven composite materials are used in various industrial fields, particularly in the realization of primary aeronautical structures. Reduction of the mechanical properties in compression after impact is a well-known phenomenon. This work is focused on the characterization of the tensile endurance limit of composite materials impacted by a rapid method known as self-heating. The aim of this study is to improve understanding of this phenomenon, and more accurately model the high-cycle fatigue mechanical behavior of carbon-fiber epoxy -matrix woven composite materials, including an initial dam age state resulting from a low energy impact. The specimens were made of eight layers dry HCP 482 fabrics impregnate d with an Araldite® LY 556 resin and an HY 917 hardener. Initial results show that the self-heating method allows to estimate the limit of impacted specimens in fatigue. The results of this rapid and innovative method are successfully compared with those obtained from classic, large cycle, fatigue tests.
