Towards an Authoring Tool to Acquire Knowledge for ITS Teaching Problem Solving Methods

Abstract

Knowledge acquisition in Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) remains a major challenge for designing and building them. In the context of the AMBRE project, whose main objective is to design ITSs for teaching problem solving methods, we wish to enable a teacher, who is not necessary an IT specialist, to be able to explicit knowledge needed for an AMBRE ITS. For that purpose, we propose to design an authoring tool for the AMBRE project: AMBRE-KB. In this paper, we present the approach adopted for the design of AMBRE-KB and a process to acquire knowledge to be taught for a given domain of learning. We also discuss the results of experiments conducted in four domains: arithmetic problems, french verb conjugation, pastry recipes description and polygons area in geometry, in order to evaluate the utility of AMBRE-KB.
