OSE: An adaptive user interface for fluvial navigation training.

Résumé

A challenge for virtual reality applications is to increase the efficiency of the interaction. For this purpose the adaptation of aids while the user is exploring the environment for a learning task can be obtained with what we call an informed interaction. This paper studies the design and the realization of a novel adaptive user interface for fluvial navigation training i.e. without an intelligent tutor. The OSE system we propose is specifically designed for fluvial navigation training in a virtual environment. Adapted multimodal feedback (visual aids, audio messages, etc.) is displayed to the learner according to their performance. Various sensors collect data about the user (the gaze direction, the heart rate, the actions on ship controls, etc.). We designed a decision-making module in order to choose, in real time, the multimodal feedback to display. We chose the belief function theory for the decision-making in order to deal with the uncertainty and the incompleteness of the collected data. An experiment has been conducted to evaluate the contribution of our system for novice and experienced learners, compared to two other systems. First results show a benefit for novice learners.
