Corpus-based study of language and teacher education
Résumé
Use of corpus linguistic tools and techniques is not restricted to decision-makers upstream but can also be extended to learners and teachers alike, and should constitute an essential part of language teacher training today. This chapter discusses research into different uses of written and spoken corpora, whether as a learning aid or a reference tool, and some of the potential advantages of the many uses of corpora and how these relate to current language learning models. The potential is vast, ranging from simple closed activities that are coherent with many traditional classroom practices to serendipitous exploration of self-built corpora. This inevitably makes it impossible to cover everything in teacher training, but a usefully eclectic DIY approach can be encouraged to exploring language via free on-line resources as well as the internet itself.
