Métamorphoses et métaphores en traduction

Résumé

Can a form be translated, or is it just a matter for the translator of ‘saving appearences' over the necessity of transformations? Some linguists – although not many – still think with Sapir and Whorf that thought is determined by language, others like Harris, Chomsky or Mel'cuk seem to operate on the assumption that a stable meaning can survive syntactic transformations. Psycholinguists have shown that meaning and form are stored separately in our brains, which could explain the phenomenon translation specialists call deverbalisation. And yet, form must be taken into account in order for us to recognize a work after the translation. How this can be done is explained by the notion of gestalt – form in German – which is the form taken by knowledge stored in our brains. This is illustrated by a comparison between different covers of a French novel translated into English and German.
