Adopting an aesthetic point of view, this dissertation seeks to investigate the specificity of pop-rock
and advances the idea that what distinguishes this genre from others within the popular music realm
is the use of sound technology for production, in focusing its compositional development mainly on
the dimensions of timbre and sound. The incorporation and the prevalence of electric and electronic
instruments, the use of effects and of synthetically produced sounds, the manipulation of sound and
the employment of the recording studio as an instrument are then seen as leading to the
experimentation with compositional possibilities which, working on sound itself, are essential for
the definition of pop-rock as a style, and that will give way to the assimilation of new elements at
the heart of what will become, in this same movement, its privileged musical material. Furthermore,
it is proposed that pop-rock music is part of a trend from the era in which it was born and
developed: on the one hand, from the standpoint of the importance gained by technology in relation
to art in general, insofar as it is integrated as a constitutive part of artistic technique. On the other
hand, because pop-rock is part of a larger musical paradigm it shares with other traditions of 20th
and 21st century academic music, a paradigm for which the exploration of timbre is central, often
accompanied by a very strong link with technology in the compositional task. Pop-rock is thus
understood as the first artistic expression in the field of popular music that has taken on in a
decisive way the relationship that art in the age of its technical reproducibility has with technology
for creation.
On
On entend
