Sport and balneology in the spa town of Vichy: 1875-1914
Thermal cures
were particularly popular in the mid-19th century. Crowds of
water drinkers flocked to French and foreign spas. And yet,
this craze could not be justified solely on therapeutic
therapeutic reasons alone. The many leisure activities available in spa towns
are also worth considering. For example, daily life
daily life in the resort of Vichy is punctuated by entertainment.
As well as the inevitable casino, balls and theatrical performances, people
discover the joys of the first elegant sports between 1850 and 1914:
turf, pigeon shooting, lawn tennis, golf, motoring, aviation, etc.
Our research focuses on the processes by which these sports were introduced
and transformations of sporting practices in Vichy.
Vichy. Is the spread of sporting practices and events the result of
the result of a transformation in ways of thinking about health, or the
or the expression of an advertising strategy to win over and attract
customers?
