STUDY OF THE DIFFICULTIES OF CONCEPTUAL INTEGRATION OF KNOWLEDGE RELATING TO THE MODELING OF THE COVALENT BOND IN ORGANIC COMPOUNDS BY FUTURE TEACHERS OF ALGERIAN PHYSICAL SCIENCES.
ETUDE DES DIFFICULTES D’INTEGRATION CONCEPTUELLE DES SAVOIRS RELATIFS A LA MODELISATION DE LA LIAISON COVALENTE DANS LES COMPOSES ORGANIQUES PAR DE FUTURS ENSEIGNANTS DE SCIENCES PHYSIQUES ALGERIENS.
Résumé
.
Starting from the hypothesis that the difficulties encountered by students in the interpretation of the reactivity of organic compounds originate from their lack of mastery of the concepts of the register of models, we have sought in this work to analyze to what extent students have integrated the knowledge relating to the models making it possible to describe the structure of the covalent buildings. What are the alternative conceptions and or "knowledge structures" that the students have built? Do they manage to relate in a conceptual structure the different concepts related to the representation of covalent structures according to the formalism of Lewis, to the hybridization of atomic orbitals and to the
the description of the formation of molecular orbitals (σ and π) in localized and conjugate systems?
The analyzes of the answers to three written questionnaires and of the exchanges between students during sequences of recorded group activities show that the knowledge integrated by the majority of the students cannot be qualified as operating knowledge. They have only integrated some knowledge, which can be qualified as procedural, relating to the different models of the covalent bond. Many students are unable to explain and justify the concepts involved in such a way as to give them meaning to make them functional in their field of use:
- They encounter difficulties in implementing a systematic reasoning procedure to represent a covalent structure according to the formalism of Lewis, more particularly when it comes to describing the electronic structures of charged species;
- They confuse the formation of hybrid orbitals with the formation of molecular orbitals leading to the formation of bonds;
- They are not able to correctly translate the representations of single, double or triple bonds in the Lewis formulas using the concepts of the quantum model
(atomic orbital, molecular orbital σ or π, delocalization of electrons) and their representations.
From the reasoning used by the students in carrying out the proposed tasks, we inferred possible knowledge structures from their conceptual integration of the
knowledge relating to the modeling of the covalent bond. In addition, a number of alternative designs have been highlighted. Finally, proposals for teaching were formulated.
particulièrement lorsqu’il s’agit de décrire les structures électroniques d’espèces chargées ;
moléculaires conduisant à la formation des liaisons ;
