The aim of this study is to understand the role of the performance in the identity construction of the initiates of the bwiti cult among the Fang in Gabon and in particular inside the bwitist community called « disumba mongo na bata ». Since musical activity is present at every moment of the main ritual called ngozo, we regard ritual as performance. To a large extent, this work aims to find a coherent and unified interdisciplinary approach of the study of performance. The choice of the performance concept is relevant. It allows us to consider in our analysis the musical matter and the other elements intimately linked to it in the ritual practice of the bwiti cult: the linguistic and corporeal matters. Our theoretical framework for the study of performance is based on Jean Molino’s theory of the musical phenomenon: the semiologic tripartition. Thus, the three dimensions of the performance, i.e, the object itself composed by the three matters (music, language, body), the strategies of production and reception, are studied according to both formal and ethnological analyses. These two planes are mobilized in each analytical stage. The thesis is divided in three parts, which highlight the necessary continuous movement between these two analytical planes. The first part offers some elements of cultural and social contexts of the bwiti cult, both in a diachronic and synchronic perspective, based respectively on anthropological sources and an ethnology of our fieldwork. We then describe the components of the ritual practice. The second part is divided in two: we first present theoretical and methodological approaches on performance in linguistics, anthropology and ethnomusicology, and then we elaborate the analytical protocol. The last part is dedicated to the articulation between data from formal analysis and those from anthropological analysis. First, we propose to study the musical system and the different types of relations between the musical matter and the two other components of the performance (language and body). Then, we underline the several relevant planes of the three matters, which take part in the endogenous categorization and in the symbolic interpretation of the performance. Indeed, performance has diverse meanings for the initiates. It structures the ritual and takes also part into the representation of the bwiti universe. Each material (songs, musical instruments, dances, ritual actions) is a specific channel of meanings both on a structural and a symbolic plane. Finally, performance has a specific role in the complex identity formation of the initiates: several identities are constructed through the different functions of the ritual actions (performative and symbolic). The performance preserves, updates and passes down to the initiates the different knowledge (practice and interpretative), and also builds up the ritual, sexual and social identities of the initiates.
