Structure of the Mesophases Formed by a Perfluoroalkyl/Biphenyl Compound. Amphiphilic and Steric Effects
Résumé
We describe the synthesis and mesomorphic behaviour of 4-(1H,1H-perfluorooctyloxy)- 4'-methoxy biphenyl. Two mesophases of smectic E and smectic A types were observed. X-ray diffraction study of the smectic E phase indicates a herringbone arrangement of the biphenyl cores, the perfluoroalkyl chains being in a molten state. The SE ↦SA transition is related to the melting of the biphenyl sublattice. In both phases, the flexibility of perfluoroalkyl chains permits the area matching between the two segregated sublayers.
