Agency and bodily ownership: the Bodyguard hypothesis Frédérique de Vignemont When I report, "I am raising my arm", there are two occurrences of the first person pronoun: at the level of the agentive experience (I am raising my arm) and at the level of the body part that is moving (my arm is raising). The first expresses the sense of agency. The second expresses a sense of bodily ownership. The question that I want to raise here is how one should understand the relationship between these two types of self-awareness. The point is not to reduce the latter to the former: one can be aware of one's body as one's own while one remains still or during passive movements for which one experiences no sense of agency.
