Teaching pragmatist and constructivist approaches to the policy process

Résumé

This chapter proposes a three-step pathway to teaching pragmatist and constructivist approaches to the policy process adapted for students without a background in sociology and who may be more familiar with positivist perspectives. The first step focuses on the complexity of producing knowledge on society from a sociology of sciences perspective. The second step sheds light on the use of constructivist and pragmatist perspectives to understand the construction of public problems and the agenda setting process. The last step strives to explain how these constructivist and pragmatist perspective approaches can also be used to develop empirical insights into all the dimensions of the policy process.
