The Eponym Chronicles from Mari – New Edition, Photographs and Comments
Résumé
Maurice Birot published the Mari Eponym Chronicles (MEC) in 1985. Since then, significant progress in the ordering of Old Assyrian eponyms has been made, notably by specialists in Old Assyrian archives. A revised publication of the Mari exemplars with better photographs is proposed in the present chapter. The editorial history of these Eponym chronicles is reexamined. Although all known exemplars of the MEC are from Mari, there is no reason to believe that Mari was the only place in Samsi-Addu’s Upper Mesopotamian Empire where such texts were produced. K. Veenhof proposed naming the three main exemplars of the MEC ‘Editions I to III’. It is argued that Edition II, which mentions Samsi-Addu’s year of birth, is older than Edition I and was perhaps created just before Samsi-Addu’s sixtieth year of life.
