Territoires, textes et savoirs au pays tamoul.

Résumé

This volume, a tribute to Élisabeth Barnoud Sethupathy, Associate Professor at INALCO for 34 years and a translator of Tamil, brings together seven contributions on the language, literature and history of the Tamil-speaking region (South India). Following an introduction that traces the career of a scholar devoted to the Tamil language, the book examines the long-term history of the material, literary and ritual manifestations of the sacred and royal city of Madurai. It outlines the winding journey undertaken by Europeans in their understanding of Tamil, a diglossic language. The rich corpus of Tamil devotional texts to which the Tēvāram belongs is then put into perspective, followed by a presentation of Nantaṉār, a figure of untouchability in Tamil Shaivite bhakti. Finally, the book offers an analytical study of a short story by a contemporary author: ‘The Writing of Memory in Na. Muttucāmi’s Nīrmai (1984)’ and Élisabeth Barnoud Sethupathy’s unpublished translation of a short story by Chudamani, ‘Sunday Evening’.
