The Empire Up Close: Resources of Ottomanness in the Maghrib

Résumé

For nearly twenty-five years, the imperial turn has been gaining momentum, yet the Maghrib has garnered relatively little attention in this shift. This article first outlines the challenges of integrating the history of Algeria during the Ottoman period into the broader history of the Ottoman Empire. It then argues that the Maghrib's Ottomanness should be conceptualized not as a static identity devised by the state but rather as a kind of resource manifesting itself at the local scale. To demonstrate this, the article analyzes the activities of the Bayt al-māl, highlighting how this institution was mobilized and established, and how the Empire's presence was both manifested and perceived through its activities. I propose the term "The empire up close" to define an analytical approach to imperial belonging that favors a systematic examination of actions in context. It also recognizes that the Empire's influence was not uniform, but rather manifested itself intermittently on a local level.
