With the rise of renewable production and the development of energy communities, residential flexibility in these communities is becoming an important issue to address. We present the results of a nudging experiment conducted in a French energy community. We deployed a nudging system, based on a demand-response logic, in one such community, in order to help members better align their electrical consumption with local production. Each week, the system suggested in advance consumption favorable periods to members. We analyse results with a “difference in differences” approach. Results tend to suggest that members who engaged with the system improved their overall alignment between consumption and local production, with respect to those who did not. However, we could not find conclusive evidence that appliance usage was shifted to the suggested periods. We discuss areas for improvements, and conclude by assessing how flexibility systems may build on the energy communities framework to help address current challenges in energy systems.
