Information and Media Education (IME) in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence: Challenges and Perspectives

Yolande Maury

Résumé

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have significantly transformed the information landscape. Capable of performing complex tasks and creating new content, these tools have provoked mixed reactions among educators. Some see these developments as an opportunity, while others are concerned about their impact on academic integrity and the possible decline of critical thinking. UNESCO acknowledges the potential of AI, but stresses the need for safe, ethical deployment, supported by resources to equip teachers and students with the necessary skills. Existing information and media education does not seem adequately prepared to meet these challenges. We will first review the recent literature on AI, its opportunities and risks in education. Then, for the French context, we will put this into perspective with institutional texts and guidance documents that inform the implementation of IME in curricula. An analytical reading of the data should make it possible to identify to what extent the choices made contribute to solving the “problems” mentioned above; and what content is missing, opening up perspectives for the future of IME.
