Introducing Digital Twins to improve the resilience of System of Systems - a Systematic Literature Review

Résumé

The resilience of System of Systems (SoS) has garnered increasing attention in recent years due to its critical role in maintaining stability and functionality amidst disruptions. This paper conducts a systematic literature review, following PRISMA guidelines, to evaluate the methodologies employed to enhance SoS resilience, comparing traditional approaches with innovative applications of Digital Twins (DTs). By analyzing peer-reviewed studies, this review identifies the strengths and limitations of these methodologies, focusing on their capacity to address key resilience properties such as robustness, rapidity, and resourcefulness, as well as absorptive, adaptive, and recovery capabilities. The findings highlight significant gaps in the application of DTs for resilience in SoS contexts, emphasizing the need for integrated frameworks and standardized metrics. Thus the novelty of this review is related to the fact that it directly compares two types of work: (i) studies that improve SoS resilience without DTs, and (ii) studies that use DTs for the same goal. By bringing these two perspectives together, this paper shows what DTs add in practice, where they overlap with traditional methods, and where important gaps remain. And the objective is to provide a side-by-side comparison to map resilience capacities/properties to concrete techniques, and to quantify where each stream is most effective. Results show that DT studies most often emphasize Adaptation and Rapidity capacities, whereas non-DT ones are more oriented on Robustness and Recovery, suggesting that DTs add most value where rapid perception-prediction-reconfiguration is needed at SoS scale. This review concludes by proposing directions for future research to harness the potential of DTs in advancing SoS resilience, fostering adaptive and sustainable systems.
