Application to the Cultural, Natural, and Industrial Heritage

Résumé

The constraints that apply to the analysis of Cultural Heritage objects and materials are explained as well as the advantages and limitations of the use of Raman microspectrometry, whether with fixed or mobile instrumentation. They emerge in part from the possible coloring or opacification of the material which can lead to the phenomenon of resonant Raman scattering. The different questions that Raman spectrometry can answer as well as the classes of materials that can be studied are discussed. The necessary match between questions, materials and illumination/signal collection optics is emphasized. Various case studies illustrate the point (corrosion, conservation, natural minerals and synthetic materials, glass, glaze, pigments, dyes, Natural resins, polymers, plastics, and modern paints, textile, biological materials). The problem of data processing and the prospects for development of the analysis technique are addressed.
