Reinventing food provision in the Anthropocene era: Towards sustainable and democratised local food systems?

Résumé

the presentation today is titled “Reinventing Food Provision in the Anthropocene Era: Towards Sustainable and Democratised Local Food Systems? The Role(s) of Social and Solidarity Economy Organisations.” We are living in what many scholars call the Anthropocene era, a time when human activity profoundly reshapes ecological and social systems, including the way we produce, distribute, and consume food. In this context, food systems face a dual crisis: they are both unsustainable — in environmental and social terms — and undemocratic, often dominated by a few global actors that limit citizens’ capacity to choose or participate in shaping how food reaches our plates. Across different territories, we see the rise of social and solidarity economy organisations that are experimenting with new ways of organizing food provision. Our question is: Can these initiatives contribute to reinventing food systems — making them more sustainable, but also more democratic?
