Carya nux‐taurinensis comb. nov., a fossil‐species incorporating Carya globosa (Juglandaceae)
Résumé
The type material of the almost forgotten fossil-species Juglans nux-taurinensis is newly analysed, a lectotype is designated, and new conspecific material detected at the Italian type locality La Morra is described. We show that Juglans nux-taurinensis must be reassigned to Carya because the locule cast of the nutshell shows two inner symmetrical longitudinal ribs protruding into the locule, which are characteristic of Carya and missing in Juglans. The new materials from La Morra clearly demonstrate that the nutshell morphology matches that of Carya globosa, a name that we consider to be a younger heterotypic synonym of Carya nux-taurinensis comb. nov.
