Varieties of empathy in architecture

Résumé

The article aims to investigate the diverse expressions of empathy in architecture, encompassing both objects and people. It explores how empathy shapes the experience of architecture as well as the architectural design process. By examining five forms of object-based understanding, the article assesses their significance in relation to empathy within architecture. Additionally, it evaluates the role of architectural representation, questioning whether images can evoke empathic responses comparable to those elicited by real buildings. Furthermore, the article examines the scope of architects’ empathy towards future building users, particularly through mental and graphic simulations of bodies. Finally, it offers a summarized table outlining the various manifestations of empathy in architecture.
